On August 29, 2019, the first sitting of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of the 9th convocation was held. As President Zelenskyy's "Servant of the People" party got the majority vote at the election on July 21, 2019, they became the stars of the day. But was it any good?
Having realized their victory, the "Servant of the People" leaders started acting very arrogantly. For instance, during the sitting preparatory meeting they passed a decision that every other party MPs will literally become backbenchers - taking the back rows of the session hall.
On August 29, 2019, it became clear that the MPs of "Servant of the People" party are completely disoriented. They say, that during their 1 week's training in Truskavets it was made clear to the that they were nobody - the voters voted for the "President's party", as very few its members have professional public image or any important political experience.
Stripped of right to speak, the MPs of "Servant of the People" eagerly voted for every draft law and decision proposed by their conductors - Chairman Dmytro Razumkov and his First Deputy Ruslan Stefanchuk. Dozens of laws were adoted in violation of the lawful procedure - without prior consideration by the Verkhovna Rada committees or any discussion. Civil activists were extremely dissatisfied when Arsen Avakov kept his post of the Minister of Internal Affairs - despite his lackluster performance, but according to oligarch Ihor Kolomoyskyi's wish. Oleksiy Honcharuk became Prime Minister, which might please foreign partners of Ukraine thanks to his image of a good economist.
The representatives of the "Servant of the People" felt proud of making the Parliament function effectively. They underlined that they were about actual business, not just some talks - and it its expected that their voters will like this approach.
However, traditionally the Parliament was a medium for discussion and search of compromise. For outsiders it appeared to be a chaos, nonetheless, it allowed to achieve the most sustainable solutions and to keep the country stable. Despite Zelenskyy's party leaders declaring them wanting fast reforms, lack of dialogue can bring them to the catastrophe. In fact, since the 1991 Independence, it is the first one-party Government - and nobody knows what to do with it.
